Tips before buying a Used Car

Buying a used car is more tedious than a brand new car. A lot of analysis and research has to be done before making a right decision. The condition of the car, aging, price and its usage details need to be given some serious thought before making a decision.

The following things need to be checked before buying:

1) Check for its engine condition. Engine is the heart of the car; hence need to be checked properly. Take a trusted mechanic along with you who can understands its overall engine performance, accidents, and tampering of the odometer.

2) Check the ownership documents. The more the numbers of owners the car's value depreciates. Check original registration papers (RC book/ Smart Card), a valid Pollution under control (PUC) certificate, Insurance papers as NCB will reveal the previous claims, and Traffic evading challans.

3) Check for the old maintenance record of the car. Car may look great from the outside, if it is not maintained properly may give more expenses later. Regular maintenance means wear and tear parts are taken care of regularly.

4) Take a thorough test drive of the Used Car. While you are test driving the used car, pay attention to the performance of the suspension, any noises from the engine, ease of driving, such as brakes, gears, and steering.

5) Negotiate for the best price of the used car. Now that you have inspected the used car thoroughly, you have a bright idea of all the advantages and disadvantages of the car. Negotiate for a best price and bring to his notice any problems with the car which needs to be rectified.

As a general rule, it is better to stay away from cars that are above five years of age as chances are high that they may need repairs. Also stay away from brands, which have been discontinued in the market, as spares can be scares and very expensive. Again if a car is approaching a major engine or gearbox overhaul, you’d be looking at a big expense in the near future.
